Ms. De Anda is a graduate of a Providence College nursing
program. She has been an active RN working within ambulatory and hospital
settings during the past 38 years.
As a hospital staff nurse, her experiences have included
providing direct patient care in areas such as pediatric emergency room and
hematology-oncology clinics, as well as adult emergency room, dialysis, medical
surgical, orthopedic, ob-gyn, and geriatrics. In the late 1970’s she
contributed to the development and implementation of Salem’s Hospital first
dialysis unit.
Within the community health/ambulatory nursing arenas, she
has worked in Oregon and Washington’s public health sectors serving Limited
English Proficient (LEP clients). During her employment with Marion County
Health Department, she became an active member of the counties diversity
committee advocating for the LEP clients served, and for increasing the numbers
of under-represented healthcare providers.
Her passion for nurturing interest in the health professions
provided the impetus for her to join a not-for-profitorganization. As Program Coordinator and mentor she
was given the opportunity to develop and implement programs that increased
diversity in the health professions. During this time she worked in partnership
with Oregon’s educational institutions, healthcare providers, and workforce
development sectors throughout the state. Within the nine years, she was
grateful to have witnessed the graduation of many diverse students in the
pursuit of their dreams.Currently she is taking a medical leave from Legacy’s foot
care services.
Ms. De Anda had the privilege of working with other Oregon
Latino/a and non-Latino/a nurses in the formation of the Oregon
Chapter-National Association of Hispanic Nurses. She has served in the role of
Secretary at the onset and in later years.
Maria Michalczyk

Maria
Michalczyk is the founder, director and instructor of the Healthcare
Interpreter Training program at Portland Community College in Portland, Oregon
which was created in 1998. Her educational repertoire includes a B.S. in
General Science, an M.A. in Anthropology from Portland State University and a
degree in Nursing from the University of Guam.
Maria
has worked as a healthcare professional for well over 38 years including
critical care, utilization review services and general nursing duties. For a
decade, Ms. Michalczyk worked for the Oregon Health Sciences University as a
Medical Interpreter Manager and Diversity Training Instructor. Before taking
this position she worked as an RN in a variety of clinical settings including
working in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
During
the mid 1990’s she was involved in the ASTM National Workgroup on setting
national guidelines on medical interpretation. During 2000 she was the
contributor to the Oregon Governor’s Racial and Ethnic Health Task Force Report
where she recommended the entire language found in the state wide report for
medical interpreter services. Ms. Michalczyk was the major contributor and
energy behind SB 790 to certify healthcare interpreters in Oregon. She
testified for the bill and presented a speech to Governor Kitzhaber for the
celebration of the bill becoming law in August 2001.
Ms.
Michalczyk has served on the Board of Directors of the National Council on
Interpretation in Health Care since 2001, serving as Co-Chair of the
Organizational Development Committee and Co-chair of the Board; Co-Chair for
the Outreach Committee and is presently the Treasurer.Ms. Michalczyk has just completed a
four year term as being the chair for the Governor’s Council on Healthcare
Interpreting in Oregon. Since February 2006 Ms. Michalczyk has been serving as
the honorary Chair for the Japanese Association for Healthcare Interpreting in
Japan. In April of 2006 Maria was awarded the “Governor John Kitzhaber Public
Health Leadership Award” granted by Multnomah County Health Department in
Oregon. In 2008 Maria served as a member of the Health Equities Committee for
the Oregon Health Board Fund, is the Vice President for the National Hispanic
Nursing Association and the Treasurer for the Oregon Latino Health
Coalition.Maria also serves as
co-chair for the certification development committee for the National Coalition
on Healthcare Interpreter Certification. Judy Ulibarri
Secretary
Judy Ulibarri is currently a Mental Health Nurse at the Portland VA Medical Center. Judy has worked at the Portland VA Medical Center s since 2006 when she began as a nursing student. She spent fifteen months on a medical/surgical ward providing care to veterans. Her background is in Public Health, where she worked for the in Multnomah County Health Department with the Latino Community in the area of Family Violence Prevention. Judy helped families new to this community learn about local resources and support.
Ms. Ulibarri has been involved in NAHN Oregon since 2004. She attended the 2005 NAHN National conference in Arizona. She attended the LA NAHN Chapter Scholarship Gala in 2008. NAHN has been an instrumental part of her academic and professional support. She has a strong commitment to supporting other Latinos into the field of Nursing and creating a sustainable and supportive networking community.
Ms. Ulibarri has raised two foster children with special needs and provided respite care services for many children. Currently she is involved with a group of nurses with a holistic nursing approach providing support, self care and professional development
Veronica Gonzalez, RN, BSN
Treasurer
Veronica Gonzalez graduated with aBachelors of Science of
Nursing from Walla Walla College. Ms. Gonzalez has been an Assistant Head Nurse since 2004 at Portland Providence Medical Center in Portland, Oregon in a Thoracic/Cervical Surgical Ward. Veronica worked for four years on an Oncology floor where she dedicated her career in comforting terminally ill patients.
